Autostrada Brescia Verona Vicenza Padova launches its distributed photovoltaic park

Transforming the motorway network into a true energy platform.
This is the vision behind the launch of the distributed photovoltaic park by Autostrada Brescia Verona Vicenza Padua—an energy infrastructure that will extend across the entire network managed by the company.

With a total investment of over €40 million, structured into three lots awarded between the end of 2025 and early 2026, the project will deliver 26 photovoltaic systems along the network. Specifically, it includes the installation of 17,443 solar panels with a total capacity of 11.87 megawatts. The modules will occupy more than 54,000 square meters across tunnels, interchanges, and motorway-owned areas, avoiding any additional land consumption.

A significant portion of the investment—over €7.3 million—is dedicated to energy storage systems, one of the project’s most innovative aspects. With a total capacity of 12.95 megawatt-hours, these batteries will enable the use of generated energy during evening and nighttime hours, ensuring continuity for critical infrastructure such as tunnels, interchanges, and toll stations.

The distributed photovoltaic park is expected to prevent over 5,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, making a tangible contribution to reducing the infrastructure’s environmental impact and strengthening the company’s energy transition journey.

The project is part of the company’s broader systemic vision, structured along four complementary pillars. The first two are already being implemented, while the others are designed to support the future evolution of the infrastructure’s energy model.

The first pillar focuses on distributed generation through the installation of renewable plants on already available areas.

The second pillar targets energy efficiency, including building upgrades—such as replacing legacy systems with heat pumps—and the gradual transition to LED lighting, promoting the integration of renewable generation with reduced energy consumption.

The third pillar looks ahead to electric mobility, with ongoing studies for the development of charging hubs at strategic nodes and service models dedicated to corporate fleets (currently hybrid or HVO diesel-powered), motorway users, and surrounding areas.

Finally, the fourth pillar explores emerging technologies—from the valorization of green waste for biomass production to green hydrogen solutions and innovative photovoltaic retrofitting applications.
